Laura Benanti Cast as Melissa Benoist’s ‘Supergirl’ Mom in CBS Pilot

Supergirl” has found her mom in “Nashville’s” Laura BenantiVariety has confirmed.

Benanti has been cast in a major recurring role, as Alura Zor-El, the birth mother of Kara Zor-El (“Glee’s” Melissa Benoist), in CBS’ superhero pilot from Greg Berlanti, based on the DC Comics character.

A strong noblewoman, Alura sends Kara to Earth to escape Krypton’s destruction. Her wisdom and guidance echoes across space and time, proving invaluable on Kara’s journey toward becoming Supergirl. The series follows Kara, Superman’s cousin, at age 24, when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be, after leaving Krypton and hiding the powers she shares with her famous relative.

As previously announced, Mehcad Brooks has been cast as Jimmy Olsen, an attractive photographer who works with Kara at CatCo, and has been living and working in National City, though the reason is still a secret.

Supergirl,” hailing from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, is exec produced by Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Arrow”) and Ali Adler (“Glee,” “The New Normal”). The duo penned the hourlong pilot.
