HBO has ordered a pilot for a period drama shepherded by “Orange Is the New Black” creator Jenji Kohan and directed by Gus Van Sant.

“New World” is described as a “provocative period drama that explores the circumstances around one of the most compelling chapters in American history where intolerance and repression set neighbor against neighbor and led a town to mass hysteria.”

Lionsgate TV is co-producing with HBO.

Kohan co-wrote the pilot with Bruce Miller and Tracy Miller. Production will begin in Massachusetts this spring.

Kohan, Van Sant, Bruce Miller and Tara Herrmann are exec producing. Tracy Miller will serve as supervising producer. Mark Burley is co-exec producer.
