Thomas Kail & Alex Rudzinski to Direct Fox’s Live Musical ‘Grease’

Tony Award-nominated director Thomas Kail and “Dancing With the Stars” vet Alex Rudzinski are set to direct Fox’s “Grease: Live” musical event, the net announced Wednesday.

Kail, who is currently directing “Hamilton” Off Broadway, will oversee stage direction. Rudzinski, who has directed all 20 seasons of “DWTS,” will be the live broadcast director.

Previously announced, the live TV musical from Paramount Television will be exec produced by Marc Platt of “Wicked” and “Into the Woods.”

His productions resonate profoundly with today’s audience, and his sharp instincts make him the perfect director to bring ‘Grease’ to a new generation,” said Platt.

He added, “Alex Rudzinski brings a wealth of experience in live television directing and has a modern sensibility and vision in creating entertainment that captivates his audiences.  We are enormously proud to have Thomas and Alex at the helm of reimagining one of the most beloved musicals of all time.”

Kail was nominated for a Tony Award for his direction of Broadway musical “In the Heights,” which won the Tony for best musical. He also worked on “Lombardi,” “Magic/Bird,” “When I Come to Die” and “The Wiz” in New York. Rudzinski’s credits also include “The X Factor,” “The BAFTA Britannia Awards” and the “iHeart Radio Jingle Ball Concert” at Madison Square Garden.

Grease: Live,” starring Julianne Hough as Sandy and Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, is set for Jan. 31, 2016.
