The horror-loving director, producer, writer and actor will host this year’s Shark After Dark, the latenight talk show that airs during the cable channel’s annual selachii-themed extravaganza. Starting July 5, he will spend five nights chatting with celebrity guests, shark fans and shark experts, among many others. Roth will also look back at some of the highlights from Shark Week and look ahead to give viewers a sneak peek at the next day’s programs.
“Being part of this is a dream come true for me as I’ve been a Shark Week fan for 20 years – it’s my favorite television week of the year,” said Roth. “I am completely shark obsessed and cannot wait to dive in and help create the most exciting Shark Week in years. I had an amazing experience re-creating the Milgram experiments for Discovery, and can’t wait to make the same type of waves on Shark Week.”
Shark Week usually brings in some of Discovery’s strongest ratings for the year. Last year’s Shark Week drew the event’s largest audience ever in women 18-49 (639,000), women 25-54 (621,000) and adults 25-54 (1.4 million), according to same-night Nielsen ratings. During the seven-day stretch, Discovery had six of the top 10 ad-supported cable originals among adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and men 25-54 and eight of the top 10 among men 18-49. It was also the week’s No. 1 primetime cable network in adults 18-49 (1.17 million), adults 18-34 (540,000) and No. 1 on all of television in men 18-49 (636,000).
Fittingly, Discovery has chosen to expand the programming this year. In addition to kicking off the events earlier than before, it’s also introducing a special weekend of new Shark Week programming at the end of summer.
Shark Week begins July 6 on Discovery Channel. “Shark After Dark” will air at 11 p.m. July 5 to 9.
