CW Orders Additional Scripts for ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ and ‘iZombie’

The CW has ordered five more scripts for both “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “iZombie,” Variety has learned.

For “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” the additional order comes before its series debut on Oct. 12, showing faith in the yet-to-bow series. “iZombie” enters its second season on Oct. 6.

“Crazy Ex” — which is paired with critical darling “Jane the Virgin” for a female-dominated Monday night comedy block on the young-skewing network — hails from star and creator Rachel Bloom, “The Devil Wears Prada” scribe Aline Brosh McKenna and director Marc Webb (“The Amazing Spider-Man”). Bloom, who co-wrote the pilot with Brosh McKenna, stars as a woman who leaves her New York law firm in search of happiness and romance with her long-ago ex boyfriend in the Los Angeles suburb of West Covina. Like “Jane,” the musical laffer (which was originally prepped for CW’s corporate sibling Showtime) is also an hour-long comedy.

“iZombie” comes from “Veronica Mars” creator Rob Thomas. Starring Rose McIver, the DC Comics-inspired zombie rom-com follows a med student-turned-undead morgue tech.

In Season 1, “iZombie” averaged a 1.1 rating in adults 18-49 and 2.8 million viewers overall in Nielsen’s “live plus-7” estimates. While it benefits in live viewing from airing behind the net’s top show, “The Flash,” “iZombie” also proved to be a good performer in delayed viewing, faring well in its first season.

The women will toss off witticisms and cry careful, pretty tears; the men will steel their jaws and declare their love, ideally [...]
