SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you haven’t watched the Aug. 17 episode of “Chasing Life.”
“Chasing Life” viewers have long been wondering if leading man Leo Hendrie (played by Scott Michael Foster) would survive the series, largely due to Foster’s busy schedule, juggling many TV shows. Up next, Foster is a regular on ABC’s fall drama “Blood and Oil.”
On the Aug. 17 episode, Leo was killed off “Chasing Life” with a somewhat-unexpected death when his new wife April (Italia Ricci) found him in bed not breathing. The on-screen couple had just tied the knot this season, after Leo proposed to the cancer-ridden April.
Before the episode aired — but after the cast had filmed the episode, in which Leo died — Ricci talked to Variety at the Television Critics Association summer press tour earlier this month, responding to fans’ relentless curiosity surrounding Leo.
“I love how people are like, ‘Oh, Leo must die because he’s on another show!’ I’m like, okay, you realize he did ‘Halt and Catch Fire,’ while he was on our show, he did ‘Once Upon A Time,’ while he was on our show, he’s been traveling Europe while he’s on our show,” Ricci said, staying mum on plot twists. “I don’t understand the math there, but if you want it, you can guess whatever you want to guess, but you’re never going to guess what happens on the show.”
Now that viewers do know what happens on the show, Leo is dead, but the character will be seen in one more episode. Exec producer Patrick Sean Smith tweeted a teaser of his re-appearance on Tuesday, and insiders close to the show tell Variety that next week’s episode will serve as Foster’s final send-off.
In the interview, Ricci also offered up her thoughts on April’s true love, as throughout the series, she’s been torn between the now-ill-fated Leo and her ex-boyfriend/co-worker Dominic (Richard Brancatisano). She also chatted about the success of “Chasing Life” and her hopes for April’s future.
“I hope she writes her book, I hope she gets to travel and I hope she just finds peace in her decisions,” Ricci said.
