Laura Dern Joins Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon in HBO’s ‘Big Little Lies’

HBO’s David E. Kelley miniseries “Big Little Lies” is shaping up with the addition of Laura Dern, Variety has learned.

Dern joins the A-list cast of Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Adam Scott, who will play Witherspoon’s on-screen husband.

Based on the Liane Moriarty’s 2014 book of the same name, “Big Little Lies is described as a darkly comic drama centering on three mothers of kindergartners whose apparently perfect lives unravel to the point of murder. Moriarty will have a producing capacity on the project.

Dern will play Renata Klein, a powerful career woman and anti-bullying crusader who is at the center of schoolyard politics on and off the playground.

As previously reported by Variety, the project has also attracted director Jean-Marc Vallée. With Dern on board, “Big Little Lies” will serve as a “Wild” reunion, bringing Vallée, Witherspoon and Dern back together after the Oscar-nominated flick.

Witherspoon and Kidman will pull double duty both starring and exec producing the limited series with their respective production partners. The pair both optioned the book rights through their own shingles, Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard Films and Kidman’s Blossom Films, and will serve as EPs with Pacific Standard’s Bruna Papandrea and Blossom Films’ Per Saari. Kelley will write and produce through his David E. Kelley Prods.

Dern is repped by CAA.
