Amy Poehler and Chris Rock Were Considered for ‘Daily Show’ Gig

Trevor Noah may be Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” replacement, but he wasn’t the only comic Comedy Central approached about taking the job. A recent New York Times magazine article revealed that the comedy network considered several other higher-profile individuals for the gig, including Amy Poehler and Chris Rock.

The feature states that someone from Comedy Central “made a call to Amy Poehler … to gauge her interest,” and cites an off-the-record source who said, “They were pretty much expecting her to say no, and it was the quickest no in history.”

Chris Rock was apparently interested, but the comedian did not want to sign on past the 2016 presidential election. The Viacom-owned network ultimately decided against such a short stint.

Stewart’s announcement that he would leave the “Daily Show” back in February ignited a flurry of speculation about who would be his replacement, but none of the postulating had been confirmed until now.

Kent Alterman, Comedy Central’s president of content and original programming, confirmed that the network “had a lot of conversations with different people,” but he said that Noah was the only potential host to receive a formal offer.
