A+E Networks Sells Scripted Series ‘UnReal’ to France, Spain

PARIS– A+E Networks has closed major sales on “UnReal,” the first scripted series from its newly launched banner A+E Studios International.

The announcement was made today by Joel Denton, managing director of A+E Networks’ international content sales and partnerships, in the run-up to MipTV, which kicks off April 13 in Cannes.

“UnReal” has been acquired by France’s top commercial network TF1 and Spain’s Antenna 3. The series has also been licensed to Lifetime in Canada, Latin America, the U.K., South East Asia, Poland, and Africa. A+E Networks will soon unveil more deals.

Denton noted that the key-territory sales were made at an early stage: The series is due to air on Lifetime U.S. later this year. “This is an exciting time for A+E Networks, as we look to build out our scripted slate and grow our broadcast relationships with key partners across a broad range of scripted shows,” added Denton.

Inspired by Sarah Gertrude Shapiro’s short “Sequin Raze” and set against the backdrop of hit dating show Everlasting, “UnReal” stars Rachel Goldberg (“Girls”) as a young producer whose sole job is to manipulate her relationships with contestants in order to get the  outrageous footage demanded by the show’s cynical exec producer, Quinn King (“House of Cards”), demands.

Marti Noxon (“Grey’s Anatomy”) is co-creator on the series and is exec producing, along with Bob Sertner (“Revenge”), Stacy Ruckeyser (“Twisted”) and Sally DeSipio (“Do Over”).
