Disney Media Distribution Latin America: Juan Gabriel Biopic Series

Show to air on TNT Latin America, Telemundo and Azteca, Mexico

Disney Media Distribution Latin America (DMDLA) is partnering with Somos Productions to produce a 13-episode biopic series on Latin American icon Juan Gabriel.

“Hasta Que Te Conoci” (“Until I Met You”) will trace the life of Alberto Aguilero Valadez until he became the “divo of Juarez,” aka Juan Gabriel.

Skein will air, perhaps simultaneously, on TNT Latin America, Telemundo in the U.S. and Azteca in Mexico by this time next year.

“This is the first biopic drama series of the several we have in development,” said Fernando Barbosa, senior VP, Disney Media Distribution Latin America.

“We think the biopic genre is an evergreen property; something that will always be watched time and time again, especially this one,” said Barbosa, who expects the series to be licensed across all digital platforms after its run on the over-the-air networks.

Disney Media’s go-to shingle in Mexico, BTF Media, will produce the series in Mexico.

“I am making this series with much love and much gratitude to every individual who participated in my life,” said Juan Gabriel, 65, who is a partner in the production.

The new series underscores Disney’s commitment to developing local productions of both scripted and non-scripted formats.

In Latin America, DMDLA has made Spanish-language editions of “Desperate Housewives” and “Grey’s Anatomy” in various territories since 2005. A Portuguese-language version of “Desperate Housewives” was also made for Brazil. In Spain, Disney Media Networks teamed with leading Spanish producer Jose Luis Moreno and Luis Balaguer and Sofia Vergara’s Latin World Entertainment in 2010 to co-produce a remake of “The Golden Girls,” titled “Las Chicas de Oro,” for Spanish pubcaster TVE.
