LONDON — Former “Friends” star David Schwimmer is to join the cast of sitcom “Morning Has Broken,” which has been greenlit by U.K. broadcaster Channel 4.

Schwimmer will play an American producer brought in to try to save a floundering breakfast-time show, “Good Morning… with Gail Sinclair.” The role of the show’s host, the “Queen of Daytime,” is taken by Julia Davis, who co-wrote “Morning Has Broken” with Nick Mohammed. Mohammed will play one of Sinclair’s fellow anchors.

After eight years of high ratings and winning awards, things begin to go wrong for Sinclair when the program loses viewers and tensions break out within the production team.

“Morning Has Broken” is due to air next year. It is produced by Gary Reich at Brown Eyed Boy, in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Davis, whose credits include “Nighty Night,” said she is “looking forward to experimenting with friends whose work I love.”

Rachel Springett, commissioning editor for comedy at Channel 4, said: “Julia is one of our most talented comedic writers and actresses and it’s a testament to the quality of her writing that she can attract such a big star.”
