CNNIndonesia, a localized version of Turner International’s all-news channel, began broadcasting Monday (local time). The channel is a co-venture with Indonesian media group Transmedia.
Transmitting in Bahasa Indonesia from dedicated facilities within Transmedia’s broadcast center in Jakarta, the channel is a mix of international and local content, focussed particularly on news, business and sport. The partners earlier launched a CNN Indonesia website in October last year.
The predominantly Muslim archipelago nation is the world’s fourth most populous country, with an estimated population of 255 million.
“This is an incredibly important day for us. To be able to extend our footprint locally and reach millions of Indonesians is hugely exciting and humbling,” said Jeff Zucker, CNN porldwide president.
Transmedia operates two free-to-air channels, a pay-TV outlet and web portal Detik.
The launch follows some five months after CNN launched another regional service in South East Asia, CNN Philippines.
