Eli Roth Drops Blood, Keanu Reeves Enjoys Playing Victim at ‘Knock Knock’ Premiere

Director Eli Roth had a lot to celebrate at the premiere of his sexy thriller “Knock Knock” Wednesday night at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

The  “Hostel” and “Cabin Fever” helmer was showing his fifth Lionsgate project, which distinguished itself from the filmmaker’s oeuvre in a unique way.

“It’s finally time for me to make a movie without blood,” joked Roth about his step away from the slasher genre. The director also noted that this was the first time he had two projects showing in theaters at the same time. His 2013 cannibal flick “The Green Inferno” was also released in September.

“I figured, ‘Green Inferno’ is my mic drop and afterwards I didn’t know where to go from there,” he said. “I wanted to do a movie that was psychological.”

In “Knock Knock,” Roth drew inspiration from the 1977’s “Death Game” along with co-writers Nicolás López and Guillermo Amoedo. The story follows two seductive young women (Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas) who visit a family man (Keanu Reeves) while his wife and children are away on vacation. The original feature starred Colleen Camp, who has a cameo and producer credit in the 2015 feature.

Also stepping into new territory was Reeves, who had to shed his notable action hero persona for the main role. Coming from “John Wick,” Reeves wanted a project that pushed him in a different direction.

“I spoke with Eli… and then I read the script and it just had such great writing and a mixture of tones: a psychological thriller, a comedy, a little bit horror,” Reeves said. “It was really cool to do something different and to be tied up and to be tortured. It was fun.” He soon clarified, “In a movie, it’s really fun.”

The theater was a packed house with Peter Bogdanovich and Kelly Preston in the audience. The after-party was held immediately after the screening at the Roosevelt Hotel, where Reeves enjoyed drinks, hors d’oeuvres and music with Roth, López, fellow cast members and guests.
