James (“Shrek the Musical,” “Next to Normal”) will play one of two brothers whose playwriting career is overshadowed by Shakespeare in the history-tweaking comedy. Borle (“Peter Pan Live!,” “Peter and the Starcatcher”) plays the rock-star Bard himself.
Both actors appeared in a recent industry reading of the show, which has songs by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick (“Over the Hedge,” “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”) with book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell (“Spitting Image”). Casting for further roles — including the brother of James’ character and the female leads — remains to be set.
Casey Nicholaw (“The Book of Mormon,” “Aladdin”) directs and choreographs the musical, which will land at the St. James Theater for a run that starts previews March 23 prior to an April 22 opening. The St. James’ most recent occupant, the short-lived revival of “Side Show,” shuttered over the weekend.
