Paramount Pictures has acquired the spec “Bounty” with Will Smith attached to star.

Sascha Penn wrote the script, which follows a man, wrongly convicted of murder, who escapes from prison determined to prove his innocence — a nearly impossible task after the widow of the man he supposedly killed puts a $10 million bounty on him, dead or alive.

Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment will produce the action-thriller along with Adam Kolbrenner of Madhouse Entertainment. Robyn Meisinger exec produces.

There is no timetable on when the film will go into production.

Having built a career on big-budget tentpoles, Smith has been drawn more recently to projects with a darker, edgier feel. He can be seen next opposite Margot Robbie in the con artist drama “Focus,” which bows on Feb. 27, and has the Sony drama “Concussion” coming out this Christmas.

Smith does have the tentpole “Suicide Squad” bowing in August 2016, but even that is considered darker than his big-budget franchise pics. He is repped by CAA and Overbrook Entertainment.

Penn’s other credits include MGM pic “The Idolmaker” and sci-fi spec “The Ditch,” which Warner Bros. recently picked up. He is repped by CAA and Madhouse Entertainment.
