Pixar Boss: ‘Toy Story 4’ Will Be a ‘Romantic Comedy’

Toy Story 4” isn’t scheduled for release until 2017, but recent comments from Pixar president Jim Morris suggest we’re in for a different take from the original storylines.

“It will be a romantic comedy,” Morris said, according to reports from Disney Latino (and translated by the Daily Telegraph).

The film marks the return of director John Lasseter, who helmed the first two “Toy Story” films. It will be written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who penned the 2012 rom-com “Celeste and Jesse Forever.”

Morris said that the franchise is headed in a new direction and will not be a continuation of the massively successful third installment, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide and was nominated for a best-picture Oscar.

“In temperament it is, but it will be a love story,” he said.

He also added that the film will not put much emphasis on the relationship between toys and children. But Morris emphasized that Pixar only makes sequels that they are passionate about, not just because they are virtually guaranteed to be box office cash cows.

“That’s not what it’s about,” he said. “It’s about an idea that is met with enthusiasm.”

The film is slated for its U.S. release on June 16, 2017.
