Tom Hardy has dropped out of Warner Bros.’ “Suicide Squad,” ditching the Rick Flag role in the DC Entertainment tentpole directed by David Ayer.
Jake Gyllenhaal, who worked with Ayer on “End of Watch,” is being considered as a replacement, according to the Wrap.
Hardy exited the project due to a tight schedule. He’s currently shooting Western drama “The Revenant,” directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and with Leonardo DiCaprio also starring, and he’s committed to a publicity tour for Warner’s upcoming “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which opens May 15.
“Suicide Squad” stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne. The movie will begin shooting in April in Toronto and has an Aug. 5, 2016, release date.
Producers are Charles Roven and Richard Suckle. Based on the DC comicbook, the story centers on the team of supervillains who are given a chance at redemption by the government.
