Sony Classics Buys Woody Allen’s ‘Irrational Man’ for North America

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all North American rights to Woody Allen’s upcoming film “Irrational Man” from Gravier Productions.

The cast includes Jamie Blackley, Joaquin Phoenix, Parker Posey and Emma Stone. The film, shot in Rhode Island with roles for academics and students, marks the eighth collaboration between Allen and Sony Classics.

Producers are Letty Aronson, Stephen Tenenbaum and Edward Walson.

Sony Classics and I have a good working relationship. I like the way they handle my movies, very special, very classy and I always hope my films live up to their expectations,” Allen said in a statement.

Sony Classics did not disclose the release date. It has handled distribution in the U.S. on Allen’s last seven  films, dating back to “Whatever Works.”

Woody Allen’s new movie ‘Irrational Man,’ his latest annual gift to moviegoers everywhere, is as fresh and winning as ever,” the company said.

Allen began shooting the movie in July in Rhode Island with the movie described as a “contemporary story” with academics, graduate students and middle and working-class characters.

Allen’s most recent film, “Magic in the Moonlight,” starred Colin Firth and Stone. It was released by Sony Pictures Classics in July and has grossed $32.3 million worldwide.
