San Sebastian: Ivana Baquero, Julio Perillan Topline ‘Sister of Mine’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Pic marks a move towards the mainstream for helmer Pedro Aguilera

SAN SEBASTIAN — Ivana Baquero, a child star in Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth,” and Spanish-U.S actor Julio Perillan (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) topline family drama “Sister of Mine,” the third feature of up-and-coming Pedro Aguilera (“Influence,” “Naufragio”), one of Spain’s more prominent art film directors who can score major fest berths.

“Sister of Mine” is also the latest production from Colombia’s Cannes-winning Ciudad Lunar. “Sister” has now initiated principal photography. Shooting will run through mid-October.

Pic was presented as a project at the 2013 San Sebastian Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum, whose fourth edition takes place from Monday at the 63rd San Sebastian Festival, which kicks off today in the Basque Country resort. “Sister” was unveiled in Paris at the Small is Biutiful co-pro meet.

“Sister” is a co-production between Cristina Gallego at Colombia’s Ciudad Lunar – whose “Embrace of the Serpent,” topped this year’s Cannes Directors Fortnight and is Colombia Oscar submission – and Spain’s Jorge Manrique Behrens (Carmelita Films) that serves as associate producer.

Key cast also includes Lucia Guerrero (“Unit 7”), Nicolas Coronado (“Love Is Not What It Used to Be”), Juan Pablo Shuck (“The Body”) and Elisabeth Gelabert (“Magical Girl”).

Described by Aguilera as a “Michael Powell’s ‘Peeping Tom’ meeting Mike Leigh shooting ‘Naked,’” “Sister” is a sexual obsession story turning on a young film director who one day happens upon a porn website that hosts a video starring his young sister. Script is co-penned by Aguilera and Spanish novelist Juan Carlos Sampedro.

Aguilera sophomore feature “Influence” was produced by Mexico’s Cannes multi-laurelled Carlos Reygadas and his partner Jaime Romandia (Mantaraya). Aguilera worked on Reygadas’ “Battle in Heaven” as assistant director.

“Sister” looks several steps closer to a mainstream arena than Aguilera’s first pics. “’Sister’ is intense, sensual and raises questions. It’s a movie with a classic structure, which revives one of the biggest stories for mankind and brings it into contemporary world. ‘Sister’ tackles the tragedy of incest in an age of selfies and online video,” Gallego told Variety.
