‘San Andreas’ Shakes Up DVD, Blu-ray Disc Sales Charts

Disney scores big with 'Aladdin' Diamond Edition Blu-ray Disc debut

A steady stream of summer tentpoles continues to debut on disc now that the fourth-quarter selling season is in high gear.

Warner’s big-budget disaster movie “San Andreas,” which generated $155.2 million in domestic ticket sales, bowed at No. 1 on Nielsen VideoScan’s overall disc sales chart for the week ended Oct. 18, while Walt Disney Studios’ “Tomorrowland,” a family adventure starring George Clooney, rode its $93.4 million U.S. box office gross to a No. 3 debut.

Sandwiched in between them is Disney’s long-awaited Diamond Edition Blu-ray Disc edition of the 1992 animated classic “Aladdin,” featuring the voice talents of the late Robin Williams, which bowed at No. 2.

On Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, “Aladdin” easily debuted at No. 1, with “San Andreas” at No. 2 and “Tomorrowland” at No. 4.

Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” distributed by Disney, slipped to No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart and No. 4 on the overall disc sales chart after commanding the No. 1 position on both charts for the last two weeks.

Rounding out the top five on the overall disc sales chart was Warner’s “Magic Mike XXL,” the sequel to 2012’s “Magic Mike,” which had debuted at No. 2 the previous week.

The No. 5 spot on the Blu-ray Disc chart went to Universal Pictures’ “Furious 7,” with “Magic Mike” coming in at No. 6. On the overall disc sales chart, “Furious 7” finished the week at No. 6, down from No. 3 the previous week.

According to Nielsen data, “Aladdin” generated virtually of its sales during the week from the new Diamond Edition Blu-ray Disc. “San Andreas” generated 40% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, a surprisingly low ratio given the film’s over-the-top special effects, while “Tomorrowland” generated 47% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc.

In its third week of availability, “Age of Ultron” generated 57% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, down from 62% the previous week and 63% in week one.
On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, “Furious 7” shot to No. 1 now that its month-long holdback from Redbox is over, bumping “Avengers: Age of Ultron” to No. 2.

“Tomorrowland” bowed at No. 3, the only new release to make it into the top five. Sony Pictures’ “Insidious: Chapter 3” slipped to No. 4 after debuting at No. 2 the previous week, while the No. 5 spot went to Warner’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” down from No. 3 the prior week.
