Sam Smith Teases That He’s Doing the ‘Spectre’ Theme Song

Is Sam Smith singing the theme for the next James Bond film or not? Despite previous denials, the British singer dropped a hint on Monday that strongly suggests he’s working on the song for “Spectre.”

The Grammy winner posted a mysterious photo on his Twitter and Instagram on Labor Day, showing a photo of a hand wearing a ring that, as many 007 fans have noticed, contains the sea creature logo for criminal organization SPECTRE — Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion. The design dates back to the 1962 Bond film “Dr. No.”

The major hint is a departure from Smith’s previous comments, where he denied that we would be doing the follow-up to Adele’s Oscar-winning 2012 Bond hit “Skyfall.”

“That’s not me,” he told BBC Radio 2 when asked if he would be singing the song. “That’s definitely not me. I’ve still got loads to do. I’ve got an Australia tour, but I kind of finish in December which is great, it gives me a chance to be in London, be in my home and go out with my friends.”

As rumors swirled, names like Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Adele (again) were thrown into the mix. Past musicians who sang the theme include Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, Carly Simon and Jack White and Alicia Keys.

The Sam Mendes-directed “Spectre” will hit theaters Nov. 6.
