Cannes: Ricky Gervais’ ‘Office’ Spinoff Movie Gets Financing

Entertainment One and BBC Films have come on board to finance Ricky Gervais’ comedy “Life on the Road” — a spinoff movie from his TV series “The Office.”

Worldwide sales will launch in Cannes through eOne Features and eOne will directly distribute the film in the U.K. and Australia/New Zealand.

“Life on the Road” will be directed, written by and star Gervais. It will be centered on a documentary crew catching up with Gervais’ David Brent character – former star of the series “The Office” and now working as a travelling salesman — as he chases his dream of rock stardom by self-financing a U.K .tour with his band “Foregone Conclusion”.

“I’m so excited that the world will see what David Brent is up to now and where his future lies,” Gervais said. “This film delves much more into his private life than ‘The Office’ ever did and we really get to peel back the layers of this extraordinary, ordinary man.”

“The Office” ran for two six-episode seasons in 2001 and 2002 and aired two Christmas specials in 2003.

Current eOne productions include Gavin Hood’s “Eye in the Sky” and Fabrice Du Welz’s “Message from the King.”
