A shopping rush the week before Christmas helped Universal Pictures’ “Minions” maintain the No. 1 spot on the national home video sales charts for the week ended Dec. 20, despite the arrival of four high-profile new releases.

During its second week at the top of both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, “Minions” actually sold 11% more units than in its first week.

The top newcomer, bowing at No. 2, was Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” the fifth film in the action-spy franchise based on the classic TV show. The film, with a $195 million box office gross, sold 61% as many total discs as “Minions” and 74% as many Blu-ray Discs.

Sequels also took the next two spots, with No. 3 on both charts going to 20th Century Fox’s “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” followed at No. 4 by Universal’s “Ted 2.”

Rounding out the top five overall was Walt Disney Studios’ “Inside Out,” which was No. 7 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart. “Star Wars: The Original Trilogy” was No. 5 on the Blu-ray chart.

The fourth major new release, 20th Century Fox’s “Fantastic Four” remake, could muster only a No. 7 debut overall (No. 8 on the Blu-ray Disc chart).

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “Rogue Nation” took the top spot, helped by the fact that the other top-selling titles are from studios that hold back new releases from Redbox for a month.

Universal Pictures’ “Trainwreck” dropped to No. 2, Walt Disney’s “Ant-Man” shrunk to No. 3, Warner’s “Vacation” dropped to No. 4 and Universal Pictures’ “Self/less” stayed at No. 5.
