Matthew Vaughn Eyes ‘Flash Gordon’ as Next Project

Following the success of “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” 20th Century Fox has acted quickly to find helmer Matthew Vaughn’s next franchise — and this time he’s turning his attention to space.

Sources tell Variety that Vaughn is in talks to direct “Flash Gordon,” based on the classic ’30s comic strip, with “Chronicle” producer John Davis and George Nolfi on board to produce.

The character and his adventures have been a major influence on pop culture, providing inspiration for many sci-fi directors, including “Star Wars” creator George Lucas. The comic first appeared in 1934 and spawned three film serials starring Buster Crabbe, as well as a cult 1980 adaptation with Sam Jones in the titular role. The story followed the famous space explorer, his love interest Dale Arden and scientist Hans Zarkov as they battle ruler Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (“Star Trek 3”) wrote the script, working from a treatment by Nolfi.

“Kingsman” has grossed nearly $400 million at the worldwide box office, and “Flash Gordon” marks the first project to which Vaughn has committed since “Kingsman” bowed in February. He is repped by WME.

The news was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
