Romance “The Longest Ride” has launched respectably for Fox with $625,000 at 2,360 locations in the U.S. at Thursday shows starting at 8 p.m.
The Nicholas Sparks book adaptation, starring Scott Eastwood as a bull rider and Britt Robertson as a college student, is expected to rope in about $15 million this weekend as it expands to 3,364 locations.
“The Longest Ride” is the only new wide release this week and offers counterprogramming to Universal’s second weekend of “Furious 7,” which should dominate the box office. The action-thriller could add about $65 million to $70 million over the Friday-Sunday period.
“Furious 7” opened with $147.2 million last weekend, then added $36.5 million over the next three days to lift the U.S. total to $183.7 million.
