HBO has unveiled the first trailer for Kurt Cobain documentary “Montage of Heck.”

The trailer offers a first look at how home movies and photos, family interviews and animated segments combine to tell the story of Cobain’s life from a child growing up in the Pacific Northwest to his teen years and ultimately to his position as Nirvana’s frontman. Cobain died in 1994 at the age of 27.

“Montage of Heck” bowed at Sundance, with Variety‘s Dennis Harvey calling the collection of footage and interviews “absorbing stuff, amply conveying the magnetism of a conflicted leader who drew fanatical adoration, yet who one suspects wasn’t easy company.”

The documentary will premiere on HBO on May 4, with a companion book hitting shelves on April 7.
