‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ Bows at No. 1 on Home-Video Sales Chart

'SpongeBob' movie drops to No. 2

The surprise theatrical hit “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” a spy film that opened back in February but kept a steady beat at the box office and has now grossed more than $128 million, easily topped the national home video sales charts for the week ending June 14.

The 20th Century Fox release bumped Paramount’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” from the top spot on both the Nielsen VideoScan overall disc chart, which tracks combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales, and Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc-only chart.

“SpongeBob” settled in at No. 2 but according to Nielsen data only sold about one-third as many discs as “Kingsman,” which is loosely based on the popular comic book “The Secret Service” and was directed by Matthew Vaughn.

“Kingsman” generated 51% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray, according to Nielsen, compared to 36% for “SpongeBob,” down from 44% in the animated comedy’s first week in stores. Accordingly, “SpongeBob” slipped to No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart, behind Warner’s “American Sniper,” which on the overall disc chart was No. 3. Blu-ray Disc accounted for 40% of total unit sales for “American Sniper” during the controversial action film’s fourth week of availability.

Another new release, “The DUFF,” from Lionsgate, debuted at No. 4 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 6 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. The high school comedy, an ugly duckling story that stars Mae Whitman as the girl unfortunately designated as the “Designated Ugly Fat Friend” by her peers, earned $34 million in U.S. theaters. The film only generated 25% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc.

Rounding out the top five on Nielsen’s overall disc sales chart was Warner’s “Jupiter Ascending.”

On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, Paramount’s “Project Almanac” debuted at No. 1. The sci-fi film, about a group of teens who built a time machine, with near-disastrous results, only earned $22.4 million in theaters and debuted at No. 8 on the Nielsen overall disc sales chart.

The DUFF” debuted at No. 3, right behind Universal Pictures’ “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which rose a notch from No. 3 the previous week.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” fell to No. 4 after debuting at No. 1 the prior week.
Rounding out the top five rentals on the Home Media Magazine chart was Universal Pictures’ “The Boy Next Door,” down from No. 2 the prior week.
