‘Jurassic World’ Tops Trio of New Releases on Disc Charts

'Pixels' bows at No. 2 while 'Max' and 'Southpaw' follow

Jurassic World,” from Universal Pictures, remains the top-selling home video title for the second consecutive week – despite the arrival of three high-profile newcomers that lined up right behind it on the national home video sales charts for the week ending Nov. 1.

Sony Pictures’ “Pixels,” a sci-fi comedy about aliens attacking the earth with weapons based on vintage video games, rode its $78.7 million domestic box office take to debut at No. 2 on Nielsen VideoScan’s overall disc sales chart as well as its dedicated Blu-ray Disc-only chart.

Warner’s “Max,” about a loyal war dog who bonds with his late owner’s brother, debuted at No. 3 on the overall sales chart after earning $42.7 million in U.S. theaters.

And Anchor Bay’s “Southpaw,” with a domestic box office gross of $52.4 million, debuted at No. 4. The film, a boxer-redemption story, stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams and Forest Whitaker.

Rounding out the top five on the overall disc sales chart was Warner’s “San Andreas,” down from No. 2 the prior week.

On the Blu-ray Disc chart, “Southpaw” came in at No. 3, followed by Walt Disney’s “Aladdin” at No. 4 and Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” also distributed by Disney, at No. 5.

According to Nielsen data, “Jurassic World” generated 63% percent of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, down from 67% in its first week of availability. This compares to 46% for “Pixels,” 22% for “Max” and 49% for “Southpaw.”

On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, 20th Century Fox’s “Spy” shot to No. 1 now that its 28-day holdback from Redbox is over, while “Pixels” and “Southpaw” bowed at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Both are from studios that do not withhold titles from Redbox until a month after street date.

Another 20th Century Fox release that has just become available in Redbox vending machines, “Poltergeist,” came in at No. 4, while the No. 5 spot went to Universal Pictures’ “Pitch Perfect 2,” which was No. 1 the week before after coming off its month-long holdback from Redbox.
