Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights to the Italian drama “The Wait,” starring Juliette Binoche.
The film, set for release in the spring, marks Piero Messina’s (assistant director on Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty”) feature film directorial debut. “The Wait” premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year just prior to its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
With Sicily as his backdrop, Messina navigates a range of emotions in telling the story of the relationship between two women from different generations. Binoche stars as a mother who has to deal with the unexpected arrival of her son’s French girlfriend, played by Lou de Laâge.
“Benefiting enormously from its evocative Sicilian setting, this widescreen experience makes bewitching use of space, time and sound, creating an almost meditative atmosphere in which patient-minded auds might respond to its themes,” Variety’s Peter Debruge wrote in his review.
The film was produced by Nicola Giuliano, Francesca Cima, Carlotta Calori, Fabio Conversi and Jérôme Seydoux.
