Toronto: Berlin Winner ‘Ixcanul’ Bought by Kino Lorber for U.S.

Kino Lorber has acquired all North American rights to “Ixcanul,” Guatemala’s first official entry for the Academy Awards and the winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

The drama also screened at the Telluride Film Festival and will be screening at the Toronto Film Festival.

The Guatemala/France co-production will receive a theatrical release in 2016, before a VOD and home media release during the fall.

The story centers on a 17-year-old Mayan girl who lives and works with her parents on a coffee plantation. A snake bite forces her to go out into the modern world where her life is saved, but at steep price.

Ixcanul” won best picture at the Cartagena Film Festival and the best Latin American film and director awards at the Guadalajara Intl. Film Festival.
