The first trailer for the “Independence Day” sequel, “Resurgence,” is here — and it’s eerie.
“I spent 20 years trying to get us ready for this,” says Jeff Goldblum’s character in the footage. “We used their technology to strengthen our planet. But it won’t be enough.”
And it certainly looks like he has reason to worry — the trailer shows images of fallen soldiers, massive explosives and emotional turmoil. The clip was released Sunday, during Fox’s broadcast of the NFL’s Chicago Bears-Washington Redskins game.
“Resurgence” is the sequel to Roland Emmerich’s 1996 blockbuster starring Will Smith, who is not returning for the latest installment.
The story follows the nations of Earth after they’ve collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet — which comes under an unprecedented attack by aliens.
Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Judd Hirsch, Sela Ward and Charlotte Gainsbourgwill be starring in “Resurgence,” with Bill Pullman, who played President Thomas J. Whitmore in the original, returning.
Emmerich is returning to direct, and is also producing with Dean Devlin, who produced the original film, and Harald Kloser. Emmerich, Devlin, James Vanderbilt, James A.Woods and Nicolas Wright wrote the screenplay.
“Independence Day: Resurgence” will hit theaters on June 24, 2016 — nearly 20 years to the day after the original film was released.
