HBO Acquires SXSW Doc ‘Mavis!’

HBO has acquired U.S. broadcast rights to “Mavis!,” about the life of musician and civil rights activist Mavis Staples.

The doc, directed by Jessica Edwards, premiered at SXSW in March to positive reviews. Staples was part of the iconic 1960s gospel group the Staple Sisters.

“Mavis!” was produced by First Film.

The deal was negotiated by Josh Braun and David Koh from Submarine.
