Universal offered plenty of scares at its CinemaCon panel — though none as blood-drenched as Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak,” which evoked plenty of gasps from startled exhibitors.

“When I was growing up, I loved Gothic romance,” del Toro said. “It has very sick and twisted elements in it — that’s why I like it. And I wanted an operatic spectacle.”

The creepy footage in a new trailer shown to exhibitors centered on the brother-sister relationship between the characters played byTom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain, who live in a massive old home with plenty of dark secrets in the 19th century. Hiddleston’s bride, played by Mia Wasikowska, discovers that her new spouse is not who he seems to be.

Del Toro constructed a four-story mansion for “Crimson Peak,” adding, “I wanted to make the film mostly practical, with no greenscreen.”

Legendary Pictures produced, with Universal set to release “Crimson Peak” at the height of the Halloween season on Oct. 16.
