‘Furious 7’ Speeds to Top of Disc Sales Chart

Action sequel outsells Disney's 'Cinderella' 2-to-1

Universal Pictures’ “Furious 7” shot to the top of the national home video sales charts its first week in stores, selling more than 2.5 million Blu-ray Discs and DVDs its first six days in stores, according to Universal.

The seventh and top-grossing film in the fast-car franchise easily debuted at No. 1 on both Nielsen VideoScan’s overall disc sales chart and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week ended Sept. 20, selling more than twice as many discs as fellow newcomer “Cinderella,” from Walt Disney Studios.

Universal said “Furious 7” generated $52.5 million in consumer spending, factoring in digital sales.

“’Furious 7’ shattered records around the world at the box office and continues to reach incredible heights in home entertainment, an extraordinary achievement for the seventh installment of any franchise,” said Universal Pictures Home Entertainment President Eddie Cunningham.

With a domestic box office gross of more than $351 million, “Furious 7” is the biggest theatrical earner in the franchise, which began in 2001 with the original “The Fast and the Furious.”

The live-action “Cinderella,” in contrast, earned more than $201 million in theaters.

The release of the two new films ended a two-week reign at the top of the sales charts by Warner’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which moved down to No. 3 on both charts.

Season eight of the popular TV series “The Big Bang Theory,” also from Warner, debuted at No. 4 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc chart.

Rounding out the top five on the overall disc sales chart was Lionsgate’s “The Age of Adaline,” which slipped three notches after debuting the prior week at No. 2. The No. 4 spot on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart went to a collection of all seven “Fast and Furious” films, which bowed at No. 6 on the overall chart.

Both of the top-selling newcomers sold most of their copies on Blu-ray Disc – 62% for “Furious 7” and 60% for “Cinderella.”

On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, “The Age of Adaline” remained at No. 1 for the second week while “Cinderella” bowed at No. 2. The two new releases were followed by holdovers “Unfriended,” from Universal Pictures, “Home,” from DreamWorks Animation/20th Century Fox, and “Hot Pursuit,” from Warner, all down one chart position from the previous week.
