Cannes: Film Factory Boards Alberto Rodriguez’s ‘Espia’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Spy thriller, produced by Zeta Cinema's Francisco Ramos, rolls from July 20

Film Factory Ent.’s Vicente Canales has inked with Zeta Cinema’s Francisco Ramos to handle world sales rights to spy thriller “El espia de las mil caras,” Spanish helmer Alberto Rodriguez’s follow-up to 2014’s pic “Marshland,” an international sales hit and critically acclaimed noirish thriller.

Set-up at Madrid-based production house Zeta Cinema, “El espia de las mil caras” turns on the real life story of Francisco Paesa, a Madrid-born spy and playboy who became one of Spain’s most wanted fugitives.

Now in advanced pre-production, an 11 week Spanish-language shooting kick off July 20 in Paris, will continue in Switzerland, Hong-Kong and Laos, and then will shoot mainly in Madrid and the Basque Country, Francisco Ramos said.

According to Ramos, a Spanish cast will be announced in two-to-three weeks.

“Alberto is a powerful director and we defend their film vision and look, prioritizing the artistic integrity over more commercial criteria,” Ramos added.

In the film, “there’s an incredible metaphor about corruption, about the enormous ability that we have, in Spain, to generate para-political people who are not part of the government or state but seem to be more in control of the country than politicians themselves,” Ramos said.

“El espia” marks one of the most anticipated Spanish pics for next year, where Warner Bros. plans a theatrical release by the fall.

On board “Espia” are also “Marshland” co-producers, Atresmedia Cine, Jose Antonio Felez’s Atipica and Gervasio Iglesias’ Sacromonte. Paybox Canal Plus took Spanish pay TV rights.

“After selling worldwide, ‘Marshland’ will be Alberto Rodriguez’s first film opening widely in theatrical, which puts Alberto in a higher dimension, as an internationally recognized film director. I think ‘El espia’ will be one of the strongest Spanish films for next year,” Canales said.

Film Factory will show a first promo at the AFM, Canales added.

Penned by Rodriguez and regular co-writer Rafael Cobos, “Espia” is based on same title novel by Spanish journalist Manuel Cerdan.
