The Weinstein Co. has delayed Elle Fanning’s transgender drama “About Ray,” three days before its scheduled Sept. 18 release in the U.S.
TWC has not set a new release date for the film, formerly titled “Three Generations,” but it’s expected to take place before the end of the year.
“About Ray” premiered on Sept. 12 at the Toronto Film Festival, evoking a standing ovation and positive reviews with Variety‘s Andrew Barker calling it “a crowdpleaser.” The film was picked up the Cannes Film Festival after buyers were shown a promo reel of the project, directed by Gaby Dellal, for a reported $6 million with a minimum 500-screen commitment.
Fanning plays a New York teenager seeking to transition from female to male. Watts portrays her mother, and Sarandon is her lesbian grandmother.
Producers are Big Beach’s Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf along with Dorothy Berwin. Big Beach also financed “Three Generations.”
Focus Features is planning on a Nov. 27 opening for transgender drama “The Danish Girl,” starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander.
The news about “About Ray” was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
