Toronto: Elizabeth Kim Schwan Joins Covert Media as President of International

Newly launched Covert Media has hired veteran sales executive Elizabeth Kim Schwan as president, international.

Covert Media, which was launched on Aug. 26 by Media Content Capital and Paul Hanson, made the announcement of Schwan’s hiring on the opening day of the Toronto Film Festival.

Schwan joins Covert Media after serving in a business development role for Grosvenor Park Media and as an EVP at Sierra/Affinity, where she oversaw the sales and distribution of films including “Drive” and “Ender’s Game.” She also headed the international division of The Film Department, which produced “Law Abiding Citizen,” and worked from 2000 to 2007 as an international sales executive at Lionsgate Films, overseeing “Monster’s Ball,” “Hotel Rwanda” and the “Saw” franchise.

Covert Media is aiming to produce, finance and distribute three to four films a year with budgets in the $10 million to $50 million range.

Its slate at Toronto includes the Bill Murray comedy “Rock the Kasbah”; “The Family Fang,” directed by Jason Bateman, who co-stars with Nicole Kidman and Christopher Walken; “Franny,” starring Richard Gere, Dakota Fanning and Theo James; “Time Out of Mind,” also starring Gere; and the thriller “Strange but True,” starring Imogen Poots, Bill Paxton and Melissa Leo.

    Film Review: ‘Above the Shadows’

Grief-fueled romantic fantasies can be tricky for filmmakers not named Wim Wenders. Everyone aspires to make “Wings of Desire” with its stirring immediacy, beautiful imagery and pressing poignancy, but most wind up delivering something closer to its decent but dreary American remake, “City of Angels” — which could also be said for writer-director Cynthia Myers’ [...]
