Bold Films to Produce Ric Roman Waugh’s Prison Thriller ‘Shot Caller’

Bold Films has come on board to produce and fully finance Ric Roman Waugh’s crime thriller “Shot Caller,” which will begin shooting May 26 in New Mexico.

Bold’s Michel Litvak and Matthew Rhodes will produce with Waugh and Participant Media’s Jonathan King, who developed the project. Bold’s Gary Michael Walters will exec produce with Participant topper Jeff Skoll.

Shot Caller” follows a newly released prison gangster who’s forced by the leaders of his gang to orchestrate a major crime with a brutal rival gang in Southern California.

Waugh, who broke into the business as a stuntman, wrote and directed “Snitch” and “Felon.” He went undercover as a volunteer parole agent in California to research prison gangs for his “Shot Caller” script.

“No one knew I was a filmmaker,” said Waugh. “They just saw me as a rookie cop, so nothing was censored. What I quickly learned is the guards might control the doors and gates, but the gangs run the prisons… and they run the streets as well, directly from prison. ‘Shot Caller’ is an authentic look at our prison gangs and the law enforcement professionals who guard them inside prison walls.”

Bold Films produced “Nightcrawler” and produced and financed “Whiplash.” It’s also in production on the second season of the Syfy series “Dominion.”

    Macao Film Review: 'Bellbird'

Mild, mellow and as life-affirming as a soft fall of springtime New Zealand rain, Hamish Bennett’s charming if overfamiliar debut feature “Bellbird” — so named after a species of avian indigenous to the region, which Captain Cook reportedly described as having a song “like small bells, exquisitely tuned” — is a fondly bittersweet tribute to [...]
