Barry Sonnenfeld will direct and produce a movie adaptation based on James “the Amazing” Randi’s “Project Alpha,” the real-life story that appeared in the feature documentary “An Honest Liar.”

The documentary by Justin Weinstein and Tyler Measom opened a week ago in New York and Los Angeles. It’s expanding to more than 40 markets this weekend.

The feature film will be produced by Sonnenfeld Productions. Weinstein and Measom are attached as producers.

“Project Alpha” was an elaborate ruse orchestrated by Randi together with two fake psychics. Beginning in 1979, the project lasted over two years until the hoax was revealed publicly in a press conference held at Discover magazine.

“I sought out Justin and Tyler immediately after I watched ‘An Honest Liar’ at Telluride Mountainfilm,” said Sonnenfeld. “Not only did I love ‘An Honest Liar,’ but I knew there was an excellent narrative film to be made out of this story, with James Randi playing the ‘behind the curtain’ puppeteer.”

Sonnenfeld’s credits include “Men in Black” and “Get Shorty.” He’s in pre-production as the director on Kevin Spacey’s “Nine Lives.”

The documentary was released by Richard Abramowitz’s Abramorama. It premiered last year at the Tribeca Film Festival.
