The American Film Institute’s AFI Docs has set “Best of Enemies,” exploring the 1968 debates between William F. Buckley Jr. and Gore Vidal, as its opening night film on June 17.

Filmmakers Robert Gordon and Morgan Neville will host a discussion after the screening at the Newseum. The debates took place during the Democratic and Republican National Conventions and aired live on ABC News.

Magnolia Pictures will release the film on July 31 in Los Angeles and New York. Neville won the Oscar last year for “20 Feet From Stardom.”

The festival concludes on June 21 with HBO’s “Mavis!” The movie from Jessica Edwards explores Mavis Staples and her family group, the Staple Singers, and includes live performances and conversations with collaborators such as Chuck D, Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, Prince, Bonnie Raitt and Jeff Tweedy.
