Walden Media and Montecito Pictures have bought movie rights to Joe Ballarini’s upcoming three-book series “A Babysitter’s Guide to Monsters.”

HarperCollins imprint Katherine Tegen Books acquired publication rights last month and plans to publish the book in late 2016 or early 2017. The story follows a teen girl searching for the child she was babysitting after the child is kidnapped by monsters.

Ballarini wrote the script for Hasbro’s upcoming “My Little Pony” movie and “Lockdown at Franklin High” for Sony Pictures with Michael Bay producing.

Walden, which is controlled by Philip Anschutz, specializes in backing family-friendly fare including “The Chronicles of Narnia” series, the “Journey to the Center of the Earth” series, “Nim’s Island,” “Charlotte’s Web,” “Bridge to Terabithia,” “Holes,” “Amazing Grace” and the documentary “Waiting for Superman.”

Walden Media most recently released “The Giver,” starring Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Skarsgård, Katie Holmes, Odeya Rush and Taylor Swift. It is in post-production on Universal’s adventure/thriller “Everest,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, Keira Knightley, John Hawkes, Sam Worthington, Emily Watson and Robin Wright.

Ballarini is repped by Paradigm, Apostle’s George Heller and McKuin Frankel.
