Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Junun’ to Debut Exclusively on Streaming Platform MUBI (EXCLUSIVE)

LONDON — Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film “Junun” will have its exclusive worldwide premiere on subscription streaming platform MUBI on Oct. 9, following its Oct. 8 opening at the New York Film Festival.

Earlier this year, Anderson, whose credits include “Inherent Vice,” “There Will Be Blood” and “The Master,” joined his friend and collaborator Jonny Greenwood, guitarist with the band Radiohead, and Israeli musician, composer and poet Shye Ben Tzur on a trip to Rajasthan in North-Western India, where they were hosted by the Maharaja of Jodhpur. Their destination was the 15th-century Mehrangarh Fort, where Greenwood, with the help of Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, and a group of musicians drawn from across the Indian sub-continent, worked on Ben Tzur’s album, which will be released by Nonesuch in November.

The band assembled a makeshift studio at the fort and over the following three weeks created the collaboration that became the music and film of “Junun.” (The word “junun” is an alternate spelling of “junoon,” the Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Hindi word for “mania,” or “the madness of love”).

“The results deliver the close camaraderie of artistic collaboration and a sonic, visual and sensory experience that will capture your imagination,” said MUBI in a statement.

Efe Cakarel, founder and CEO of MUBI, said: “The founding vision of MUBI was to build a place where a director such as Paul Thomas Anderson could premiere a unique film like ‘Junun.’ To be here today is not only an honor and a significant milestone but a realization of everything we dreamed of in the beginning.”

Anderson added: “We’re huge fans of MUBI and wanted to be a part of what they do. Hopefully people will discover both the music that’s been made by Shye and Jonny and a great place to watch films.”

MUBI, which is available in more than 200 territories, is curated, and as such offers just 30 movies at any one time. Every day one is added to the list, and one drops off.
