Kike Maillo’s ‘Toro’ Goes To Wild Side in France (EXCLUSIVE)

Action thriller, handled by Film Factory, also sells to CIS, Middle East, Portugal

Paris-based Wild Side has taken all French distribution rights to Kike Maillo’s action thriller “Toro,” one of the most awaited Spanish films for next year.

Handled by Vicente Canales’ Film Factory Entertainment, “Toro” has also been acquired by Moscow-based All Media Company for CIS territories, Selim Ramia & Co for Middle East and Cinemundo in Portugal.

Film will be ready for delivery by 2016’s first quarter, Canales said.

A groundbreaking full-on upscale action thriller in Spain, “Toro” boast a topnotch cast led by three of Spain’s most popular actors: Mario Casas (“Unit 7”), Luis Tosar (“El Nino”) and Jose Sacristan (“Magical Girl”).

Described as a hyper-realistic film that unspools over 48 hours, “Toro” toplines Casas as an ex-con going straight until he receives the unexpected visit of his brother, whom he hasn’t seen in five years, asking for help because he owes a lot of money to a dangerous gangster.

“Toro” marks the second feature from Barcelona’s Kike Maillo, who debuted in 2011 with Daniel Bruhl-starrer robot drama “Eva,” which the Weinstein Company released in the U.S. and Wild Bunch sold worldwide.

The film teams three leading companies in the Spanish film business: Apaches Entertainment, producer of “The Impossible”; Atresmedia Cine, film arm of media conglom Atresmedia; and giant telco Telefonica’s Telefonica Studios as a co-producer.

Further co-production partners are Luis Tosar’s Galicia-based outfit Zircozine, Barcelona’s Escandalo Films and Maestranza Films in Seville.

“Toro” had its world market premiere at Cannes, where Film Factory presented early footage, “generating an excellent reaction from buyers,” said Canales, who plans to show much more footage at November’s American Film Market.
