‘Spotlight,’ ‘The Danish Girl’ to Open Mill Valley Film Festival

The lineup of screenings and events for the Mill Valley Film Festival’s 38th year has been announced, with a heavy contingent of films likely to figure in the awards season.

The Northern California festival will be bookended by two Focus Features films, “The Danish Girl” starring Eddie Redmayne and directed by Tom Hooper on opening night Oct. 8 and “Suffragette” starring Carey Mulligan and directed by Sarah Gavron on the closing night Oct. 18.

Tom McCarthy’s “Spotlight,” starring Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and Rachael McAdams, will share opening night honors with “The Danish Girl” on Oct. 8.

Other films making an appearance during the 11-day festival include “Beasts of No Nation,” “A Light Beneath Their Feet,” “Youth,” and “Macbeth.”

There will also be a slew of tributes recognizing industry veterans.

Catherine Hardwicke, director of “Twilight,” “Thirteen,” and “Tank Girl,” will receive a tribute which includes a screening of her latest film “Miss You Already” starring Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette.

The fest will also honor Ian McKellen, a passionate equality advocate, who utilizes his media role to fight for rights of all.

In recognition of his 60 plus years in the industry, documentary filmmaker Marcel Ophuls will receive a tribute at the festival. A screening of his Oscar-nominated documentary “The Sorrow and The Pity” and his filmed autobiography “Ain’t Misbehavin'” will play at the festival.

The 38th Mill Valley Film Festival runs Oct. 8 to Oct. 18.
