Variety has been given the exclusive first image from “Shepherds and Butchers,” which stars Steve Coogan. WestEnd Films is handling international sales and will be showing a first promo of the film to buyers at the Toronto Film Festival.
Coogan, who starred in, co-wrote and produced the Oscar-nominated “Philomena,” plays hot-shot lawyer John Weber in “Shepherds and Butchers.” Weber faces his biggest test when he agrees to defend a prison guard who has killed seven men. What ensues is a compelling charge against the death penalty itself.
The drama, which is directed by Oliver Schmitz (“Life,” “Above All”), also stars Andrea Riseborough (“Birdman,” “Oblivion”), and introduces young actor Garion Dowds. The film, which is produced by Anant Singh and Brian Cox for Distant Horizon and Videovision Entertainment, is in post-production.
