Cannes: Bogota Festival Officially Re-launches

BIFF targets city’s youth auds

Billing itself the most important young festival in the Americas, the Bogota Intl. Film Festival officially relaunched May 16 at the 2015 Cannes Festival.

“Young” can be read multiple ways. Over a Cannes Film Market Plage de Palmes lunch attended by fest board members and programmers, BIFF director Andres Bayona drilled down on the fest’s sections, which target Bogota’s youth audiences – the average age of the city’s inhabitants is around 25.

BIFF’s newly designed program includes an Off selection of innovative films, reflecting cutting-edge trends as well as a Young Blood showcase of the best of Colombian formats and new technology work, tracing relationships with music, theater and the visual arts. Further sections feature first and second features, a fest hit panorama and a tribute.

“We aim to allow Bogota’s youth audiences, which make up the majority of spectators, to have access to content they normally wouldn’t see, and to bring a more critical mindset to the films and TV they watch,” Bayona said.

Pia Barragan, at Colombian distribution/exhibition giant Cine Colombia, revealed that Cine Colombia would make its 15 Bogota multiplexes available as required for BIFF.

“Bogota is the audiovisual center of the country,” said David Melo at Invest in Bogota, one of BIFF’s major backers. “We really appreciate what Cartagena Festival has achieved. We also felt Bogota needed the best and most independent of films. So BIFF has an industry and audience importance.”
