AFI Fest Adds Oscar Foreign-Language Contenders ‘Ixcanul,’ Mustang’

The American Film Institute’s AFI Fest has added two Oscar foreign-language contenders, Guatemala’s “Ixcanul” and France’s “Mustang,” as part of the 11 films in its New Auteurs category, which highlights first and second-time directors.

Other notable titles added Thursday to the Nov. 5-12 festival in Hollywood are a pair of films that screened at Cannes: Trey Edward Shults’ “Mediterranea” and Chloe Zhao’s “Songs My Brothers Taught Me.”

Also selected were Alice Winocour’s “Disorder,” starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger, and Josh Mond’s “James White,” with Cynthia Nixon and Christopher Abbott.

The festival has already announced that Angelina Jolie Pitt’s “By the Sea” will open the fest on Nov. 5, Peter Landesman’s Will Smith-starrer “Concussion” will screen on Nov. 10 and Adam McKay’s “The Big Short” will close the fest on Nov. 12.

Screenings are held at the TCL Chinese Theatre, TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, Dolby Theatre, Lloyd E. Rigler Theatre at the Egyptian and Hollywood Roosevelt. The new films announced Thursday include:
