‘Spectre’ Opens On Top At Japanese Box Office

TOKYO – With the New Year’s peak season already in full swing, “Spectre” opened atop the Japanese box office. Bowing on 591 screens with Sony distributing, the film earned $2.9 million on 263,000 admissions over the Dec. 5-6 weekend.

This was 20% down from the previous Bond installment, “Skyfall,” but the film’s six-day total, including sneaks from Nov. 27 to 29, as well as earnings from its Dec. 4 opening day, amounts to $6.9 million on 633,000 admissions.

Toho’s “Persona Non Grata,” a biopic of WWII-era diplomat Chiune Sugihara, known as “Japan’s Schindler,” opened in the number two slot, but far behind “Spectre.” Its two-day take was $1.2 million from 118,000 admissions at 329 screens.

Bowing at number three was “The Peanuts Movie,” with Fox distributing. In its opening frame the 3D animation took $1.25 million from 115,000 admissions.
