Box Office: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Handily Beats ‘Sinister 2,’ ‘American Ultra’

Notching its second weekend in first place, N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” pulled in $8 million in Friday showings, putting it on track for a $28 million weekend, according to studio estimates. Newcomers “Sinister 2,” “American Ultra” and “Hitman: Agent 47” won’t be able to keep up with the hip-hopper.

Directed by F. Gary Gray and starring Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Universal/Legendary’s “Compton” is dominant at 3,025 locations for its second frame. The biopic made $25 million between Monday and Thursday; it’s poised to cross the $100 million mark on Saturday, nine days after its release.

Behind “Compton” is Tom Cruise starrer “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” from Paramount, which is expected to make $12 million in its fourth weekend of competition at 3,442 theaters.

In third place for the weekend will be horror sequel “Sinister 2,” which is tracking for $11 million for the weekend after posting just shy of $5 million in Friday receipts. The Focus/Gramercy pic, made on a $10 million budget, will play across 2,766 theaters. Starring Shannyn Sossamon and James Ransome, “Sinister 2” is about a mother and two sons in a rural house haunted by an evil spirit.

Fox videogame adaptation “Hitman: Agent 47” will finish in fourth place with an opening weekend total of $8 million and a Friday gross of $3 million. Starring Rupert Friend as a genetically modified killer, the actioner carries a $35 million pricetag; it’s unlikely to reach the heights of the 2007 original’s haul of $39.7 million.

Slick 1960s espionage reboot “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” is tracking for a total of $7 million in its second weekend after posting $2 million in Friday grosses. Starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander, the Cold War action-comedy will top a cumulative gross of more than $25 million by weekend’s end.

Finishing the weekend in sixth place will be stoner action-comedy “American Ultra,” on its way to a $5 million-$6 million weekend total after pulling in $2 million in Friday receipts. The Lionsgate pic reunites Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg (last seen together in “Adventureland”).
