A debut film written and directed by Visar Morina, “Babai” had its international premiere at the Karlovy Vary fest where it won the directing prize. The film was also awarded three prizes at the Munich Film Festival in the German New Talent Award category for script, director and actor.
“Babai” follows the story of Nori (Val Maloku) and his father, Gezim (Astrit Kabashi), who are cigarette vendors in 1990s Kosovo during Milosevic’s regime. The father finds a way to illegally migrate to Germany and his son does everything he can to be with his father.
The deadline to submit Oscar foreign-language entries is Oct. 1. The nominations will be announced Jan. 14 and the Academy Awards will take place Feb. 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
